What is dependency?
In California, dependency is a condition in which a minor has been:
- Abused, or
- Neglected, or
- Inadequately cared for, or
- Is physically dangerous to the public because of a mental or physical deficiency or disorder.
Or all of the above.
The law is found in Welfare and Institutions code Section 300 et al.
The dependency proceedings focus on the parents’ conduct or neglect and the effect of this on the minor’s welfare.
